Athenahealth Integration: How Does It Work?

What is the Athenahealth Integration?
The Heidi Health and Athenahealth integration brings together clinical documentation and administrative tasks in one seamless system. Once integrated, you can conduct your consult as usual, checking in the patient on Athena EHR software, while using Heidi AI scribe on the side to generate clinical notes in real time. Simply push those AI-powered notes back into Athena with just one click. No copy-pasting, no formatting struggles.
Why Clinicians Love the Athenahealth Integration with Heidi
Designed to Work the Way You Do
Heidi doesn’t replace your existing workflow on the Athenahealth platform; it enhances it. You still open patient encounters inside Athena, and when you’re ready to document, start recording a session in Heidi. It picks up details from conversations in real time and formats them using templates that reflect your exact note style.
Templates That Mirror Your Style
With Heidi, you’re not forced into one format because you can easily create templates that reflect how you naturally write or customize templates from our community of healthcare providers around the world. From tightly structured SOAP notes to narrative discharge summaries or bullet-style nursing care plans, Heidi adapts to you, not the other way around. You can also share templates across your team for consistent documentation.
True One-Click Documentation
Once your consultation is complete, your clinical notes can be pushed directly into Athena EHR software with section-based linking. Connect specific parts of your note, like History of Present Illness, Review of Systems, or Treatment Plan, to the matching fields in Athena. You don’t have to toggle between tabs, manually transfer content, or reformat your text. Heidi takes care of the handover, so your notes are right where they need to be.
Optimized for Speed and Accuracy
Heidi supports multiple voice styles, so you can decide how detailed each consult needs to be, whether brief for quick visits or super detailed for complex assessments. You can also add patient context like labs, referrals, or histories to enrich the note. With built-in SNOMED-CT and ICD-10-CM coding, Heidi helps you capture everything needed for documentation and billing, without missing a beat.
Globally Secure, Built for Athenahealth
The Athena integration with Heidi Health is native and secure, enabled through the Athena Marketplace and connected using your practice credentials. Heidi is certified for HIPAA, SOC2, ISO27001, and GDPR compliance, among other international standards for patient safety and data security. No audio is stored, and you retain full control over what is pushed into your clinical system.
Real-time notes, real-world impact: In one of the world’s largest clinical rollouts of ambient AI, Heidi has been proven to:
- Reduce time spent per consult on documentation by 51%
- Increase note quality satisfaction by 38%
- Decrease documentation-related stress by 58%
- Boost confidence in documentation accuracy by 33%
- Reduce after-hours admin by 61%
- Improve work-life balance satisfaction by 45%
Clinicians consistently tell us it’s not just about eliminating administrative burden and minimizing cognitive load, but it’s also about being more present with their patients and reclaiming their time.
How Does the Athenahealth Integration Work?
Whether you're seeing patients in person or via telehealth, Heidi Health’s AI medical scribe fits directly into your daily practice by capturing details while you speak, tailoring notes to your style, and saving you valuable time at every step of the way. Here’s how the Athenahealth integration with Heidi generally works in five easy steps:
Step 1: Register via Athenahealth Marketplace
Start by visiting Heidi on the Athenahealth Marketplace. Log in to your Athenahealth account, select “Contact Partner”, and complete the form. Our team will follow up with a second form to finalize your registration, usually within 2–3 business days. Once submitted, we’ll notify you when the integration is approved and ready for setup.

Step 2: Enable the Athenahealth Integration within Heidi
Once you’ve been granted access, log into your Heidi account and navigate to the “Integrations” section from the left-hand menu. Select “athenahealth” from the dropdown list. You’ll then be asked to enter your Practice ID and your first and last name, exactly as they appear in Athenahealth EHR software. After selecting your Athena user from the list, click “Connect to Athena”. Both systems are now integrated
Step 3: Prepare the Athenahealth Patient Record
Before documenting in Heidi, ensure that the patient has been checked in and an encounter has been created within Athena. This step is important because Heidi cannot initiate new encounters or access records for unchecked-in patients. Only those with active sessions in Athena will show the option to ”Push Note to Athena” inside Heidi. If you don’t see the option, double-check that the encounter is live in Athena.
Step 4: Begin Your Consultation in Heidi
With the encounter active, switch to Heidi and click “Start transcribing”. Speak naturally as Heidi captures the conversation and structures your notes according to your chosen template. If you need to step away, pause the recording at any time, then click “Resume” when you're ready to continue. This gives you full control during dynamic patient sessions.
Step 5: Link Sections and Push the Final Note
Once the patient interaction is complete, you can link individual note blocks to corresponding fields in Athena using Heidi’s section linking tool. This can be done directly in the note editor or set it once in your template for repeated use. When you’re ready, click “Push Note to Athena.” Your note will appear in the patient record within Athenahealth, automatically structured and ready for final review, edits, or billing.
