Heidi, the AI Care Partner for Australian clinicians, has entered a 12-month partnership with
Cabrini Health, a leading not-for-profit private health service, to bring Heidi’s AI capabilities into Cabrini’s emergency department (ED). This partnership follows a four-week pilot of Heidi’s AI scribe, which indicated meaningful improvements in clinician documentation time, complex patient throughput, and overall staff experience.
About 25,000 patients present at Cabrini's ED each year, with 43 per cent of those admitted - a particularly high rate for the private sector - reflecting its role in managing complex and urgent presentations. The partnership with Heidi will support Cabrini’s ongoing investment in clinical excellence and patient-centred care by helping clinicians reduce administrative load. It will also help free up more time for direct patient interaction – a priority for a not-for-profit private hospital that strives to continually improve its patients' experience.
Across four weeks in January, a cohort of Cabrini’s ED clinicians used Heidi to support over 1,600 patient encounters following four weeks of training. The clinicians used Heidi to support 51% of patient consultations, and key success metrics included:
- An average of 31 minutes saved when entering clinical notes into the patient's electronic medical records (EMR) using an AI-assisted note.
- Patients requiring admission had their ED care completed 24 minutes earlier.
- A strong early adoption rate and usage of Heidi for the duration of the pilot.
- No adverse clinical events and no negative patient feedback reported
- High clinician support, with 97% indicating they wanted continued access to an AI scribe.
- Clinicians reported improvements in work enjoyment, reduced cognitive load, and more time available for procedures, care coordination and patient conversations.
The 12-month partnership will enable Cabrini to collect more comprehensive data on Heidi’s long-term impact in supporting clinicians and enhancing the patient experience. Cabrini will continue its commitment to strong AI governance, and work with Heidi to co-design digitally-secure clinical templates to ensure accuracy, consistency and safe practice across its ED.
Dr Ian Turner, Director of Emergency Medicine at Cabrini, said: “Our emergency clinicians juggle significant administrative demands alongside their clinical work, and we’re always looking for ways to reduce that burden to improve the experience for both staff and patients.
When clinicians piloted Heidi, we found clinical documentation was completed earlier, nursing staff received plans sooner, and patients who required admission were ready to move to the ward faster. Equally as important, our clinicians told us they felt happier at work and more able to focus on patients.
As a private emergency department, our patients expect clear communication and high standards of care. This partnership will help us deliver on those expectations while supporting our staff. We’ll continue to invest in initiatives such as this which help improve the patient experience.”
Dr Thomas Kelly, Co-Founder and CEO of Heidi, added: “Cabrini has a longstanding reputation for clinical excellence, and their leadership in adopting Heidi is a testament to their commitment to supporting clinicians and improving patient experience.
We’re excited to partner with Cabrini over the next 12 months to expand Heidi’s use across its ED. We’ll continuously look to improve workflows and help clinicians spend more time on what matters most: delivering exceptional care.”
