Issue: Right hydrocele - for repair. Thank you for asking me to see John Doe. He is a healthy 18-month-old boy who indeed has a right hydrocele. There are no currently symptoms. On examination both testes are in the scrotum, and there is no suggestion of an inguinal hernia. There is definite fluid around the right testis. We discussed the pathology of inguinal hernia and hydrocele, the connection from the abdomen that allows abdominal content to protrude. In this case, just fluid, which has the classic bluish colour around the testicle. Repair involves a day procedure under general anaesthetic, small incision over the groin with dissolvable sutures, tying off the process. Risks include bleeding / bruising / infection / recurrence / rarely damage to testis / cord structures. Recovery will be over a few days requiring simple pain relief. He will need 5-7 days off daycare / school, and 2 weeks off sport. Further information can be found on my website: https://betterkids.com.au/project/hydrocele/ I'll write another note after the procedure. Thanks again for your referral.
