Metro South Health is now rolling out Heidi across its health service.

That’s five hospitals, reaching over 1.2 million people across the Brisbane southside, Logan, Redlands and Scenic Rim.

It is the largest deployment of Heidi in Australia’s public health system to date.

That’s why this story matters beyond Queensland. It shows that Heidi’s technology can hold up in the most complex, highest-volume, most heavily governed parts of the health system.

The rollout follows a successful trial of Heidi’s ambient scribe across Metro South Health, which found:

  • 92% of clinicians reported spending less time on administration
  • Over 70% of patients said their clinician spent more time with them and listened more
  • 70% of clinicians felt more present and engaged with their patients
  • 56% said the scribe was equal to or better than them at documentation
  • 22% reported improved wellbeing at work

Emergency specialist Dr Julian Wong has been clear about what changed for his team.

"Doctors and clinicians spend hours doing documentation - the scribe has given us time back to spend with our patients," he said. “Connecting with patients is one of the most important parts of healthcare and ensures we are delivering the highest standard of care. Our staff and patients are really benefiting from less screen time and more face time."

Georgie Hynes is one of many patients who has felt this impact firsthand in the consult room.

"I really felt listened to," she said. "I forgot the AI scribe was even there, and you can see how helpful it is to the clinicians."

What comes next

The rollout will continue across Metro South Health over the coming year, open to its 10,000+ workforce. As Dr Wong put it, many staff are reaching out and asking to get involved.

The work is supported by Microsoft, with Heidi now deployed on Microsoft Azure to enable secure scaling across public health and accelerate responsible innovation.

The secure Microsoft Azure environment used at Metro South Health is also enabling new ways to use data safely, helping accelerate innovation and address some of the biggest challenges facing the health system.

The evidence base for ambient AI in public health is no longer theoretical.

Heidi’s mission is to double the world’s healthcare capacity without dehumanising it. This rollout across Metro South Health represents one of our biggest steps towards achieving this.
