Background
Dr Chee Yong Chuan is a Resident Consultant Neurologist and Internal Medicine Physician at Gleneagles Hospital Penang in Malaysia. Penang draws medical tourists from across the region, and 30 to 40 percent of his patients travel from Indonesia. His sessions run in Mandarin, Chinese-English, Indonesian and Malay, sometimes several of these in one visit.
Dr Chee Yong Chuan describes neurology as a variable field. One patient arrives with one complaint, and the next brings something unrelated.
Before Heidi, Dr Chee typed each history and examination into the computer by hand. With complaints this varied, Dr Chee couldn't keep a pre-built note for a common presentation and fill in the gaps, because his work doesn't have one common presentation.
Typing every detail, word for word
Before Heidi, Dr Chee entered each patient's story, history and examination into the computer by hand. His notes also needed the patient's own words and the account from family members, so he typed those during the visit too.
"So it is very time consuming. I have to even type in quotes from patients." - Dr Chee Yong Chuan
General AI tools he couldn't trust
Dr Chee had tried entering clinical information into general AI chatbots. The results didn't hold up in a clinical setting. He also found the medical terminology came back inaccurate. In neurology, a wrong term in a note can change the clinical picture, so he couldn't use those tools for his records.
Solution
A colleague introduced him to Heidi, and now Dr Chee uses Heidi across his documentation. He transcribes sessions, dictates, and turns his notes into letters to GPs. His routine after each visit is short: he reviews the draft, checks the facts and approves it.
"So what I need to do is just to make sure that the facts are accurate. And with just a click, I can approve my clinical notes." - Dr Chee Yong Chuan
He compares the accuracy directly with the other AI tools he tried.
"It's accurate medical terms. Heidi has no issue, and it doesn't hallucinate. So I think this is one key strong point about it." - Dr Chee Yong Chuan
Four languages in one clinic
With so many patients from Indonesia, Dr Chee needed a tool that matched how his patients speak, not only the languages he writes his notes in.
"Transcribing in Mandarin or Chinese English, also Indonesian Malay is fantastic." - Dr Chee Yong Chuan
Guidelines summarised for him
Dr Chee's patients rarely arrive with the same problem twice, so his clinical questions vary just as widely. He has started using Heidi Evidence, which answers clinical questions with citations, and the guideline summaries are the feature that stands out to him.
Impact
"After using Heidi, I think that I've saved maybe two hours per day." - Dr Chee Yong Chuan
Dr Chee sees the documentation time saving as the starting point. The quality of care is where he notices the biggest change. Heidi transcribes the session, so he keeps his attention on the patient in front of him.
"I think that one of the biggest impacts is that I look at my patients more. I can maintain more eye contact with them." - Dr Chee Yong Chuan
Dr Chee puts that time into the patients he already sees. Each session gets more of his attention, and each note carries more detail than before.
"The quality of my consultation has markedly improved after Heidi." - Dr Chee Yong Chuan
What's next
Dr Chee sees himself at the start of his time with Heidi. By his own estimate, he uses about a third of what the platform offers, and he wants to try the features Heidi has released since he signed up.
He plans to get Heidi Remote, the clip-on AI mic for clinical documentation. Remote takes the device off the desk, which builds on the change Dr Chee values most: more time with his eyes on his patients at wherever care happens.
